Where Iran-Backed Militias Are Most Active Today

Where Iran-Backed Militias Are Most Active Today

International . Politics Article

June 26, 2025 — Iran-backed militias continue to shape conflicts across the Middle East. These armed groups act as proxies for Tehran, extending Iranian influence far beyond its borders. Their presence in several countries highlights a growing regional power shift.

From Lebanon to Yemen, these militias support Iran’s strategy to counter rivals like the United States, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. Let’s explore the key areas where Iran-backed militias operate today.

🇮🇶 Iraq: Militia Power in Plain Sight

In Iraq, groups like Kata’ib Hezbollah and Asaib Ahl al-Haq are among the most active Iran-aligned forces. They gained strength after the U.S. invasion in 2003 and during the war against ISIS.

Today, they’re officially part of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). Still, they answer more to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard than the Iraqi government.

🇱🇧 Lebanon: Hezbollah’s Stronghold

Hezbollah is the most prominent of all Iran-backed militias. Founded in the 1980s, it holds major political and military power in Lebanon. It also plays a central role in Iran’s regional strategy.

Hezbollah has fought in Syria, supported Iran’s stance against Israel, and maintains a large arsenal. Its deep roots make it more than just a militia — it’s a state within a state.

🇸🇾 Syria: Proxy Ground for Militias

Syria has long been a battleground for Iran-backed militias. Thousands of fighters came to support President Bashar al-Assad during the civil war.

Iran commands Afghan fighters in the Liwa Fatemiyoun and Pakistani fighters in the Zainabiyoun Brigade. These groups help Iran hold a corridor from Tehran to the Mediterranean.

🇾🇪 Yemen: The Houthi Connection

In Yemen, Houthi rebels receive military and financial aid from Iran. While Iran denies full control, evidence points to strong support.

The Houthis use Iranian-made drones and missiles to target Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Their fight has turned a local war into a global flashpoint.

🇵🇸 Palestinian Territories: Iranian Support

Iran also backs some Palestinian groups. Islamic Jihad and parts of Hamas have received weapons, funding, and training from Tehran.

These Iran-backed militias focus on fighting Israel and resisting Western influence. Though smaller, they are part of Iran’s larger plan to expand regional control.

🔍 The Strategic Role of Iran-Backed Militias

Iran-backed militias are not just armed groups. They are tools of foreign policy, giving Iran power without direct conflict. Their actions often weaken local governments and fuel instability.

Understanding where they operate helps explain much of the Middle East’s tension. These militias will remain key players in the region’s future. Middle East.
